Young Tree Care
- The Young Tree Care Survey brought out 100 volunteers to assess the health of 1,059 young trees.
- Prepared a report to the City on the results of the Summer 2005 tree survey effort.
- Distributed a “Water Now” postcard reminder to 800 homeowners with young street trees.
Arbor Month
- Held a Tree Talk with Samuel Yates.
- Held a tree walk at the Main Library.
- Planted 20 Evergreen pear trees at the Palo Alto Golf Course.
Mature Tree Care
- A Califorina ReLeaf grant provided funding to publish a Mature Tree Care brochure with information on how to water mature trees.
- Ivy Busters, a determined group of 90 volunteers, removed ivy from the base of mature trees in Mitchell Park.
Tree Planting
- A total of 119 trees were added to the urban forest at 10 planting events.
Right Tree in the Right Place
- Worked with Public Works to distribute brochures and promote the program.
- Inspected stump grindings at sites where trees were removed.
- Coordinated replacement tree rebate requests.
Tree Talks
- Presented "The Color of Palo Alto" by Samuel Yates, the artist commissioned by the City of Palo Alto.
Tree Walks
- Held monthly Tree Walks that frequently gathered up to 40 people.
- Created a new self-guided Tree Walk at the Junior Museum and Zoo.
Training Sessions and Workshops
- Offered a workshop series of five classes, the Community Tree Steward Workshop, with over 30 attendees in each class. Periodic training for Canopy Planting Leaders was also provided.
Community Contact
- Published two newsletters containing information on a variety of tree-related subjects which were sent to over 1,800 people. All issues are available on the website
- Featured in 20 articles in local papers.
- Received over 750 calls on the Tree Hot Line to answer questions or refer callers to resources about trees.
- Produced a six-minute narrated DVD of the work we do.
- Maintained and distributed Canopy’s certified arborist list.
- Maintained a website featuring photographs and a searchable database of information on nearly 200 trees. This website received 295,000 hits during the year.
