Canopy Urges Palo Alto City Council to Protect Trees Despite Budget Cuts

NEWS STORY: "Once trees are damaged," Canopy's Catherine Martineau explained to Palo Alto's City Council, "You can't come back and repair them." Canopy urges the City to reconsider its proposal to shift responsibility of sidewalks (and sidewalk trees) to residents, and tree trimming to contractors.

Palo Alto City Wide Tree Inventory Begins: All City trees to be professionally inspected through a Canopy-facilitated CAL FIRE grant.

NEWS STORY: Work will begin on April 5th on the City's new state-of-the-art street and park tree inventory with geo-positioning, enabling more effective monitoring and maintenance of City trees. Canopy played an important role in identifying state urban forestry grants and helping the City apply and obtain them to provide for this project's funding.

PRESS RELEASE: A California Avenue volunteer tree planting event hosted by Canopy and The City of Palo Alto is scheduled for Saturday, January 30, from 10AM - 12:30PM on California Avenue. Volunteers will receive training before planting the trees in more than twenty organized teams.

Canopy's 2009 Young Tree Care Survey Report

CANOPY REPORT: Canopy is a nonprofit organization working to promote a healthy urban forest by educating, inspiring and engaging the community in the stewardship of young and mature trees. The Young Tree Care Program was created to address these goals. The Young Tree Care Survey is a component of this program, and seeks both to educate homeowners on the proper care of young trees and to notify the City of Palo Alto of any problems with young street trees that need to be addressed.
