Sudden Oak Death Training for Citizen-Scientist Volunteers
Where: Carriage House, Holbrook Palmer Park,150 Watkins Avenue, Atherton, CA
Date: June 1, 2013
Time: 10:00 am to 11:00 am
Details: Sudden oak death (SOD) is threatening the survival of tanoaks and several species of oaks in California. Last year, UC Berkeley researchers found that the disease is moving into urban areas faster than expected.
To protect our oaks, Canopy has partnered with UC Berkeley to organize volunteers to participate in a weekend SOD-blitz in Palo Alto. After participating in a fascinating one-hour training led by Dr. Matteo Garbelotto, volunteers serving as citizen scientists will collect bay laurel leaves and return the samples to the drop box by Sunday evening. UC Berkeley researchers will process the samples the following week.
Canopy will provide Palo Alto citizen-scientist volunteers with hot-spot routes to collect samples. Volunteers are also encouraged to sample trees on their property.
Dr. Garbelotto will reveal his lab's findings and provide updated training for treating oaks based on the results for all interested in October.
