Palo Alto Stree Tree Specifics

What is a City street tree?

Trees in the planting strip or public right of way in front of homes and businesses.

What kind of care does a young street tree require?

The first five years are critical for the long-term health of the tree. Young trees need to be watered regularly, kept free of weeds, lawn, and other plants, protected from trunk damage by weed wackers or lawn movers.

How often should a young tree be watered?

A young Palo Alto Street tree needs to be watered in the same manner as all other young trees including young native oaks. Please refer to watering young trees for the details.

If a tree is surrounded by lawn does it need additional water?

Absolutely! Lawn irrigation is designed to wet only a few inches of soil. Give young trees a deep watering to encourage their roots to go down instead of staying close to the lawn for water.

Why is it important to keep any other plants (lawn included) away from the tree trunk?

Weeds, grass, and other plants compete for water and nutrients. Keep them outside the drip line. For weed control, keep the soil covered with a 3 inch layer of mulch extending 12" - 18" from the tree trunk. Mulch also helps keep the soil moist so you won't have to water as often.

Why do trees need protection from mechanical damage?

Small nicks from a weed wacker or lawn mower may seem harmless but they create a site for insects and disease to attack the young tree. Repeated mechanical damage to the trunk can cause a tree to die.

When should a young tree be pruned?

Heathly young trees should not be pruned. Leafy branches are vital for photosynthesis and they shade the trunk during summer. City crews will prune street trees when the time is right.

Should the street tree be fertilized?

Fertilizing a young street tree can cause more harm than good. If you are concerned about the health of a street tree contact Canopy or the City of Palo Alto Tree Section.

Should pesticides or herbicides be used to control insects or weeds?

Avoid using chemicals on or near young trees. Many chemicals on the market can damage foliage. Overuse of insecticides can make the infestation worse in the long run. When using chemicals in your garden, always read and follow label directions carefully and avoid application on windy days. Contact the City of Palo Alto Tree Section at (650) 496-5953 if you suspect a pest problem with a street tree.
